No throwing feces

[mood: tired] [listening to: ataris]

As some of you may or may not know, I went to visit two colleges up north this past weekend; Cornell and Carnegie Mellon (CMU). Stayed a night in their respective towns and spent a day on campus and what not. Took tours as well. And let me tell you. They're cold. Damn cold. Cornell is in Ithaca, NY, which is pretty much in the center of New York State. CMU is in Pittsburgh. Which is still. Damn cold.

Cornell was pretty cool. Their campus was a whole lot bigger than I thought and the overall vibe I got was pretty nice. Maybe that's due to the fact that I was visiting during their spring break and there were only a few people on campus. Although I did see a couple of Asians playing ping pong on a Saturday night on campus... tells you something about the student population. The first night I was there, I saw a sign that said "No skiing, sledding, or sliding" and scrawled under that in Sharpie was "or throwing feces." Something leads me to believe that comment comes from experience. On the campus tour, our tour guide told us that the most popular course at Cornell was "Intro to Wines" and that was "only because Intro to Wines is a prerequisite to Intro to Beers." It's a pass/fail course (as in you take your final and whether or not you pass or fail that, you pass or fail the course) and it's the most failed course at Cornell. Oh, and you get to drink alcohol underage as well. Other than that, I can't really recall anything else significant from Cornell. Overall, a pretty good impression. I thought I wouldn't like the Ivy League vibe, but I can live with it.

Carnegie Mellon was alright as well. Cornell still left a stronger impression, though. CMU just seemed to be full of a bunch of nerds. I feel like I should fit in just well, but I don't feel that way. Their campus was smaller but newer and it looked a little bit better, in my opinion. I do really like their research-orientated nature of study that they stress from day 1. The fact that they stress the fusion of "arts and technology" (those three words were said in union at least once every two minutes in their info session) seems like it should appeal totally to me. Maybe its their way of implementing the system that I couldn't quite grasp in their session. Oh well. My SAT scores are below the CMU 50% anyways.

I started this post last night and due to unforeseen circumstances, I'm finishing it up at 11 o'clock in the morn. Forgive me if my tone shifted to "tired" during the middle of this post.

  • [PICTURE] Heh. Heh. - Heh. Heh.

  • [PICTURES] The journey through an American high school - There can only be two explanations for this progression: an ever-increasing cocaine addiction or, more likely, IB, culminating with 5 HL exams.

  • [VIDEO] Traffic jam simulation - After driving for pretty much 2 days in a row, this really hits home. Be glad we don't live around the DC Beltway. Or in a never-ending circle, for that matter.

Headnovel

[mood: lonely, mhlm] [listening to: grooves]

Well I said when the summer came I'd update more. One counts as more than none. Although I'm now realizing that I barely have a "break" from school work this summer - this Friday I'm leaving for Cornell's summer college and when I'm back if everything works out, I'm going to start taking Physics at TCC with only about a week in between. And then a full Senior year of IB hits. This is the last summer we have before college, and I'm spending it doing school stuff. I'm not sure what kind of reflection of me that is.

I've got Guild on Friday as well, which I've been practicing like mad for, and I still have to memorize/solidify a couple of pieces. Right after Guild, we're driving up to New York. It's going to be a hell of a Friday. Which means, sorry Matt, I can't go to your party.

I just realized that at the bottom of the page, it says copyright from MMIV to MMVII. Everything on the site within the past six months isn't copyrighted. Well, as if there was really anything in the past six months...

I'll be sure to update when I'm gone though.

Over the hills and far away

[mood: kinda down] [listening to: always the same]

So I didn't really quite how much things would change when I went off to Cornell's Summer College. For one, its July 14, the middle of summer, and I'm studying for two midterms tomorrow. Yeah. I'm studying. In July. Kinda sucks. What's worse is that the courses I'm taking here are a full semester's worth of material (about 15 weeks) crammed down into six weeks. So the work load is kinda killer. But you also realize how much they weren't kidding when they say that IB prepares you for college. You see people freaking out about a 1-page double spaced paper due for a class and you can't help but think how you pulled off two WL papers in one night. And from taking Calculus here, in case you haven't known already, you realize that Surace is totally the man. His quotient rule rap still permeates throughout my dreams.

It's also true that you meet new people and make friends without even trying. And it's also not true that all the people at rich colleges are complete douches, although they certainly exist. And I hate to say that by observing them, I find myself turning into one of them. This one kid who is a complete stuck-up (you know... the kind that interrupts a movie with his own anecdote that is completely useless ("that's a weird name!") (he did that)) was twirling his keys around his finger, and I do the exact same thing. Right then I realized how annoying it was and vowed to never twirl my keys again if just to disassociate myself from him, but hopefully to be less annoying to others. I'm also going to try to be less condescending towards others, cause it's kinda annoying. Knowing you have a problem.

But not everyone is like that. Possibly one of my closest friends here had a wardrobe composed of 90% Threadless shirts. Needless to say I was in awe and admiration. Also one of the RA's here is quite possibly the coolest college student I've ever met. He moved from Korea last year (he's a rising sophomore at Cornell) and last week he arranged a Starcraft tournament. Words cannot describe how amazing that was. He has Starcraft/Warcraft/tons of others on his thumbdrive and just hands out copies. He regularly just chills with us high school kids playing games or eating lunch or something. Awesome.

And soon you realize that things aren't that much different in "college life" than in high school - although there is still that one year of age difference. The same drama, the same "hanging out" at the mall, the same its all still there. And let me tell you about the mall. If you like the big city (say, Virginia Beach), Ithaca is not for you. The food court at the mall has like four restaurants and because they couldn't find anywhere else to put them, Target, Best Buy, Borders, and Dick's are all attached to the mall. I don't think they have a Wal-Mart here. Once we literally spent 3 hours at the mall just bumming around thinking of things to do. Half of that was complaining how there's nothing to do.

But I'll complain about that some more some other time. If I update again. Which. I will. But for now I leave you some Dailies.

  • [VIDEO] Dark Knight trailer spoof - I for one cannot wait until this comes out, it'll probably beat out Iron Man for the best movies I've seen this summer. I've seen the trailer tons of times and this reenactment is worth a watch.

  • [ARTICLE] Why San Francisco is No. 1 - This is why I want to live there when I grow up.

  • [WEBSITE] Orisinal - I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but this site has so many games to keep you busy. Most of them of the... "cute" variety. But they're addicting, especially the third one (Winterbells). Although probably nothing can beat Boobah.

Back in black

[mood: hit the sack] [listening to: its an oldie from where i'm from]

So I'm back from my summer camp at Cornell. It was all a jarring experience, I must say. It takes quite a time adjusting from "college" life to life back at home. I still haven't fully adjusted yet, and its so weird not having to walk all over the place. I think the one thing I'll miss the most about camp is how close you were to people. For six weeks, friends were just a few feet away across the hall. Now they're a 10-minute car ride away. 10 feet next to me are... parents. Hurrah. I think I also must have gained 10 pounds while I was there. They're not lying about that freshman 15. I fit into pants now that I used to have to wear a belt for. And now I can't wait for college. Just which ones to apply to... as part of my rehab for getting back, I've just been looking at colleges and reading stuff on Collegeprowler. Its not a very effective rehab solution for coming back from a summer college. I need to catch up with people.

But other than that, its good to be back.

Except for the extended essay.

But other than that, its g

And the Calculus homework that was due yesterday that I'm going to turn in Monday. (bets open for how much surace will penalize)

But other than that, its good to be back.
