Hello? This thing on?

[mood: t-tired, especially my arms] [listening to: snow patrol]

Six days. Still not a record, but it seems like a while, doesn't it? Maybe it's cause Eric's computer is broken and he can't keep up the posting duties. Maybe it's cause I've been so distracted with other things lately, namely exams and Guitar Hero. Both of which get my arms really tired. Taking an Euro and English exam on the same day is not fun. Doing some Guitar Hero afterwards doesn't really help, either. I've nailed some stuff on expert though. Or, rather, just My Name is Jonas. 250,000+ points. 97%. You try that.

The canker sore in my mouth I've had all week doesn't really help my fatigued nature, either. Nor does the fact that I've yet to get the oil changed in my car after its been screaming at me for the past few weeks with oil level warning indicators. And the fact that my car smells like mac and cheese now and I ought to clean that out soon.

It feels weird talking about life here, so I'll just go into the Dailies. In case you forget, they're arranged from best to bestest.

Glad to see the Bloober's keeping up, though.

  • [PICTURE + ARTICLE] Unusual couch (NSFS warning) - I don't know what kind of sick freak would make this in art school, but suddenly I have the sudden urge to own one of these. If nothing else, it'll give me another excuse for people not to visit my house. Well maybe just Jeff.

  • [GRAPHS] When rappers use Microsoft Excel... - I actually get some of these.

  • [VIDEO] Urban Legend ER - What if all those urban legends about your bodies (a number of these busted by mythbusters though, mind you) were true? ER would look a thing like this. Look out for who has hair on their hands.

The 2007 Hubloggies: The Winners

[mood: -] [listening to: snow patrol]

And after weeks and weeks of delaying and waiting for more emails (they never came...) I finally sat down and tallied all the votes. So now, without much further ado, I give you the winners of the 2007 Hubloggies.

Oh, and if its not evident enough by the graphic, the nice Hubloggies Hubloggian Awards logo was generously blessed unto us by Nik.

Well there you go, folks. The 2007 Hubloggies. Or are they the Hubloggian awards? I would also like to comment on how surprised I was that 2 girls 1 cup won for online video. Maybe everyone thought that they were being funny by voting for it and and they were the only one... or maybe we're a very sick and twisted community. Seriously. Treeman. Thai life. All good choices. But no. You guys had to choose the lesbians and poop.

I thank everyone who participated in this and I also thank everyone who didn't: you made my job a lot easier.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some Guitar Hero to be playing.

Mondays

[mood: alright] [thinking about: my teef]

So my computer's been out of commission for a while, and my sister left so all that remains is the family computer, which is almost always being used by my dear father. Maybe my copmuter will be fixed in a week or two. Then I can get back on AIM [not on my phone] and facebooking.

Anyways. Got my wisdom teeth excised today. Not that bad. I've always been afraid of any form of surgery, but I was surprised how unafraid I was when I went in. Also, dude, laughing gas is crazy. Man. After sticking in the IV, before I knew it, I had my jacket on again and my parents were in the room. It was weird. I also have to say, moving around was a toughy. Well I get loads of pain meds stocked up to make up for my condition :D. A lot of pain meds. Doubt I'll use much though. If any of you guys have some extra cash on you though... ;)

Well about Monday. No school. As a part birthday/study session/ pre-exam awesomeness people can come to my house. Just to hang out. It's also my birthday so my mom is just inviting some asian friends of ours too. Not so sure about times. Maybe 1-4 ish or something? Someone bring Guitar Hero. Also, concerning my brithday, since it's exams this week, I discussed with my mom and we decided that I could have like a real party next monday or something. This monday is more along the lines of humble get-together. So yeah. Alright. Next week would be more of a party or gotothemallandwatchCLOVERFIELD.

Speaking of movies. Anyone seen previews for The Eye? Jessica Alba ftw, but I fear that may be the only redeeming quality for this asian horror movie remake. Why must white people keep remaking great asian horror movies? I should change that to "ruining." American bastardizations of classics. The Ring. Japanese version > US. US version was not bad though. One Missed Call, great movie. US version... not so much. The Eye. I doooouuuubt it. Anyways, just needed to say that.

Speaking of Japan. So David, you up for Japan week? Machine Girl? Monster Vaginas? Human Tetris?

Hey, Janki.
You did NOT just say that Cloverfield looks lame.

Fight the power.

[mood: I'm feeling...musical!] [thinking about: thinking. Woot! Metacognition rocks.]

There are so many things we can ask "Why?" about.

"Why did it happen to me?"
"Why do we exist?"

Or better even,
"Why not?"

There are as many questions to ask as there are things to ask about. It would appear that the number of things to query is finite, limited by the extent of our environment. Yet, we continually find new things to question and investigate--not only because of our insatiable appetites for knowledge and discovery, but because of our immense capacities for imagination.

Could you imagine a world without imagination? Possibly. It's intriguing that imagination does not limit itself. It exists without reason, logic, or rules. And, funnily enough, we can't scientifically prove its existence as we know it. So then, is imagination just...a figment of our imaginations?

Keep dreaming.

JONAS LIVES!!!!

[mood: :O wtf] [thinking about: The Giver]

I am currently helping Jeanette with her 5th grade english homework. She is reading one of my fav books, The Giver. She told me about how they are also reading two other books that form a "loose trilogy" with The Giver, Messenger and Gathering Blue. She already read GB, and with a quick wiki search, I found out it's about some chick named Kira [DEATHNOTE]. Well if you don't remember, the star of TG is a boy named Jonas. Well anyways, while browsing through wikipedia, I looked up the page for Messenger, and it says:

"Characters from the two earlier books reappear in Messenger, linking the novels more strongly."
You know what that means. It means Jonas is freaking alive. This angers me. One of my favorite parts about the original novel is that it had such a great open-ended conclusion to it. It was up to the reader to decide whether or not Jonas was alive or dead, and the fact that it was left unknown just made it a powerful ending. I also remember reading that Lois Lowry told readers that it was all up to their own interpretation. BUT THAT'S GONE NOW ISN'T IT. I personally thought that he survived and ended up in a new civilization, one like ours, but the fact that she actually makes that canon just meh's it up for me. Well alright. That's it.

btw. look out for a Japan week. Full of NSFH movie trailers/images/videos posted by David and me. Gotta coordinate with Daveeed though. So David, drop me a line dawg.

How to Vote
Because I'm too lazy to write a voting script, we're doing this the ghetto way. Fire off an email to hubloggies@gmail.com and in the body of your email list your votes. Label your vote as "Category -Title" with the category name being as it is shown here; the title of the actual nominee can be abbreviated or condensed if its too long. You may only vote for one thing per category, but you do not have to vote for something in every category if you don't feel like it or if you don't feel like you're qualified to judge. But I encourage it nonetheless.

Happy voting!

Sorry, these only come in shades of grey.

[mood: -3/10] [listening to: Deafening silence.]

Everything in life comes in shades of grey. It tends to complicate things. Making judgments and choosing sides becomes a difficult process. Opposing sides often share similarities. Every flaw comes with embellishments. Sometimes things to praise are things to disapprove of. There really is no right and wrong. There really is no black and white. Just shades of grey. When you choose to hate something, there is always something to like about it, which just spites you even more. What's worse is finding something you agree with in something you oppose.

Why can't I just choose to hate something and leave it at that?

My computer's fucking cooling system broke. When I start it up it tells me that I should turn it off immediately and take it in for repair. So now I am on my sister's computer. Fucking bullshit.

Out of the Rut

[mood: good] [listening to: Blue October]

I am going to do this in a short time,
so I am going to start with some quick points

My cousin has show @ volume CD's in lynnhaven [near my aunt's restaurant] with some other cool bands like This is Grow and stuff. Even though you probably don't know any of them. I don't quite remember time and date right now. I think date is Feb 14th.

Drums still 4 sale man. I wanna sell my drumset.

Did you guys see that thing with the prehistoric shark? The finned shark or whatever that they found alive in Japan? Pretty cool, kinda like managing to find a living celicanth [sp?].

uh oh
WoW. lol.

and now the main part...

Well I don't usually like post lyrics for updates on anything. I did a few times on xanga, in like 7th grade... when I rain out of stuff to write. However, I just thought that Into the Ocean was an awesome song and that the lyrics were amazing. I guess also the fact that the one guy uses an erhu/chinese violin in the song [Even though it only plays a few little, but very nice, parts]. So here it is...Into the Ocean

by Blue October

I'm just a normal boy
That sank when I fell overboard
My ship would leave the country
But I'd rather swim ashore

Without a life vest, I'd be stuck again
Wish I was much more masculine
Maybe then I could learn to swim
Like 'fourteen miles away'

Now floating up and down
I spin, colliding into sound
Like whales beneath me diving down
I'm sinking to the bottom of my
Everything that freaks me out
The lighthouse beam has just run out
I'm cold as cold as cold can be
be

I want to swim away but don't know how
Sometimes it feels just like I'm falling in the ocean
Let the waves up take me down
Let the hurricane set in motion (yeah)
Let the rain of what I feel right now...come down
Let the rain come down

Where is the coastguard
I keep looking each direction
For a spotlight, give me something
I need something for protection
Maybe flotsam junk will do just fine
The jetsam sunk, I'm left behind
I'm treading for my life believe me
(How can I keep up this breathing)

Not knowing how to think
I scream aloud, begin to sink
My legs and arms are broken down
With envy for the solid ground
I'm reaching for the life within me
How can one man stop his ending
I thought of just your face
Relaxed, and floated into space

I want to swim away but don't know how
Sometimes it feels just like I'm falling in the ocean
Let the waves up take me down
Let the hurricane set in motion (yeah)
Let the rain of what I feel right now...come down
Let the rain come down

Now waking to the sun
I calculate what I had done
Like jumping from the bow (yeah)
Just to prove that I knew how (yeah)
It's midnight's late reminder of
The loss of her, the one I love
My will to quickly end it all
Sat front row in my need to fall

Into the ocean, end it all
Into the ocean, end it all
Into the ocean, end it all
into the ocean, end it all

Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)

I want to swim away but don't know how
Sometimes it feels just like I'm falling in the ocean
Let the waves up take me down
Let the hurricane set in motion (yeah)
Let the rain of what I feel right now...come down
Let the rain come down

Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
(In to space)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)
(I thought of just your face)
Into the ocean (goodbye) end it all (goodbye)

This is an update.

[mood: schm':((((ish?] [listening to: lvb]

Its warm again!! The guy came to our house to fix the heater. Finally. I can proudly say its over 60 in my house.

No image tonight guys, sorry. Just a few quick dailies. As always, best is last.

  • ipod shuffle in color - yawn.

  • Bill Gates on the Daily Show promoting Vista - Are you guys upgrading to Vista? I personally don't see it as an essential upgrade like XP was. Of course in a few years, it will probably be unavoidable, but going out and buying a retail copy? Not my bag. Maybe for OS X Leopard, though. I hate it how new iterations of OS X always fractures the Mac community

  • Flickr users... beware - You may have gotten an email today about needing to switch to a Yahoo! email account, or risk losing your photos. Beware. Get a Yahoo! account now and switch or lose your photos. Unless you registered with a Yahoo! account. I am totally against this. Yahoo! bought Flickr a while back and now this practice is totally unfair. You already have our business (some of us are well-paid customers), and yet you want to alienate us by forcing your email service onto us? Yahoo!, straighten up. This makes me believe that corporate buyouts of small Web 2.0 startups is bad. Flickr, YouTube, del.icio.us, Picasa, what next? You need a Gmail account to use YouTube? This makes me want to support sites like Facebook or digg even more for refusing corporate offers. Facebook refused a $1 billion+ deal. I don't want a Yahoo! account to use Facebook. Oh, and digg my story while you're at it.

Shiver me brrr.

[mood: schm'COLD] [listening to: lvb]

With my Thinkquest duties ramping up, I'm afraid I'm forced to delay the release of Hublog 6i2, the second iteration of Hublog 6 (what you're lookig at now). I realized today the horrors of true cross-platform development when you start development on Firefox. I need to start with IE. A great downfall of Macs, indeed. In my free time though, (haha, free time), I have something in mind to keep you guys occupied that might get introduced this weekend or next. Probably next.

Argh.
Seriously. I'm getting fed up. On average each day after I come home from school, I have about 100 spam comments to delete. I'm tired of it. I hope to come up with a solution soon. Do you guys really need HTML in comments? Would it be so bad that I crippled them?

  • LED Kama Sutra - I'm sure some of you guys have seen this before, or maybe I've even posted this very thing before. But it still doesn't make it any less funny. Potentially NSFS.

  • TANGERINES! - Fun game to keep you occupied for a while. My best score is 123. See if you can be that. Best part? The elevator music. Can't wait to try this on a Wii.

  • Google Tv - For reals or is it all an elaborate prank? I don't know, but at some points, the video is pretty convincing. This links to a video tutorial that basically tells you how to sign up for a invite-only beta exclusive of Google TV, network TV streaming on the internet. However, after trying it probably over 50 times, it doesn't seem to work. And it is oddly convenient that the beta sign-ups "close" right after this thing gets popular and picks up speed and allegations of a conspiracy start to spring up. And plus, if it were real, you'd hear news reports about Google and NBC and ABC in close talks and things of that nature. Can't remember reading anything about that.

Its still very cold

[mood: schm'brr.] [listening to: lvb]

Our heat is still broken, and its currently 60 degrees. Our highest today, I believe. Oddly, at 10 at night.

Tri.
I've spent a little bit more time playing with myself on my Wii and Zelda, so expect a review of that coming.

Took the theory test today. Fun. A lot of the stuff that was on it my teachers didn't even cover. Awesome. I don't think I did too well.

  • Perfect cover - Great cover for a Mac magazine. Really fits. Don't you think?

  • There is an elephant in the way - Find the tangent of theta. I'm sorry. I can't. There's an elephant in the way.

  • I could be a web design professor - This is the website for the web design professor at St. Cloud State University. I like the fact that 95% of his links either link to a word document or some obscure file format. Man. I really want this guy to teach me. I wanna have scrolling pandas on my website as well. Maybe I should just make the bloober link to an Aeneid essay. And I like the fact that when you click "Discover where I am," it links you to Winston Salem State University. But clearly the domain and all of his logos are for St. Cloud State. Do I sense a little jealousy and a job offer rejection? Oh, and don't forget, this Site is used for education! And that he is a teacher covered under the "fair use law" Like that totally makes sense.

[mood: OH GOD] [listening to: ITS COLD]

My hands hurt.
I woke up today in the fetal position. Thats how cold it was. It is currently 51 degrees in my house because the heater broke. And it doesn't help that theres a guy here fixing it that made me turn on the broken heater... which, once you do the math, emits cold air. And he's looking over my shoulder right now as I'm typing this. Its kinda creepy. Yeah, you.

My hands are falling off as I type this. I got Zelda for my Revolution (i keep sporadically calling it that for some reason) last night and I could be playing that. But its too cold. First impressions of the game are pretty good, though. Except for the fact that there is no excuse for the sound in that game to be so poor. The speaker on the Wiimote sucks and all the music is completely MIDI/synthed. The gameplay is pretty solid though, I think. And the graphics aren't really as disappointing as I thought they'd be, perhaps its cause I got component cables last night.

  • 12-spin hamster - Its been a slow week for cool things.

  • Kids blow up a washing machine - Kids our age put together a bomb (a bomb) and blew up (they blew up) a washing machine. Dude. How cool is this. Best part is at the end when everyone runs for it.

  • An erection that lasted more than four hours - ... on an iguana. Read the article and try not to laugh out loud. I like the fact that there's at least some good news, though: The good news for Mozart and his mates is that male iguanas have two penises.

You have to admit...

[mood: India Packet!!!] [listening to: weirdass music]

You have to admit, it iskind of catchy.
Although it still warrants a huge wtf. Well the girl[?] singing in the sleep with me song gets kind of annoying. O yeah and also the videos kind of give off a huge gay vibe. Well, what can you expect from German dance music?

The guy kind of reminds me of the singer from. MSI. Sans the pokemon of course. O yea, btw. Language may be NSFSE. Not safe for sensitive ears. But I guess if you didn't like cursing you would know the song would have cursing when the title comes up as "Bitches."

I just thought. Wouldn't it be awesome to be a midget? Everything is huge. No need for a mansion, just by a house. No need for a pool, go take a bath. Limo? Volkswagon.

Just a thought.

[mood: schm':(((((ish] [listening to: lvb]

It hasn't really been a fun week. I've had exams, and now I'm half sick. I feel like I'm going to be full sick by tomorrow. Hurrah. And I've probably OD'd on Advil and Tylenol by now. If you don't see me tomorrow... you'll know that happened.

ARAGH.
I'm running out of ideas, guys. These pictures just don't make themselves up. Give me some things to draw for tomorrow.

I got the inspiration to do these daily pictures partly from Sam Brown's work at the Signal vs. Noise blog, and partly because of Jessica Hagy's indexed blog. I think its a fair mixture of Hagy's dry wit and the simple deliverance style of Brown's. And now by asking you guys to give me suggestions, its ripping off of Brown's even more. Oh well. I'll never be as sophisticated as his.

  • Why to racists have low IQs? - This doesn't really answer many questions. Instead, it raises the question of how biased and unaccurate it is. However wrong or inaccurate this may be, it is still an interesting read that I think you guys'll enjoy digesting.

  • Testers Wanted - A cool little video that really demonstrates how far the games industry has come since '83. Best part? The obscure Back to the Future reference at the end.

  • Subliminal ads - A real shocker. Watch the video that really shows what is going on here. Not only is this bad practice for the Food Network, but its also a bit creepy. First Micky D's... then Satan's face, then Dick Cheney's. I shiver at the possibilities.

Dave?

[mood: schm':(((((ish] [listening to: moz]

I just noticed that my name is "dave" under posts. And its "captain dave" elsewhere. Is my name Dave? Since when?

Got a half-half day tomorrow. Hurrah. I can finally get some sleep.

I patiently await the alignment of the planets. All four of us should have a post on the front page after Matt does his inevitable post-SOU debriefing.

And yet again, one more of these things:

Pee.
Just observations.

And Eric addressed it in his post but the Wii is pretty fun. I haven't gotten much time with it, but from what I've seen, its pretty great. Sensor strip is a bit quirky, though. Never really that accurate. You have to move between maybe a 1.5 foot horizontal space for it to register properly. If you go outside those boundaries, the thing goes crazy. Full review coming later. And it looks like things are a'stirring. Already 50% of 360 in only three months. 360's been out for a year.

  • Tragic F-1 accident - Potentially NSFS (not safe for school) due to the gruesome nature of the picture. I think the description from digg can sum up best this terrible accident: Excessive downforce during a shunt lead to damage of key suspension resulting in going off, leaving horriffic wreck. According to The Prof getting help was no longer possible.

  • All McGyver ever needs - I would probably have bought one of these.

  • Rob Paravonian, redux - The guy who did the Pachelbel Rant is back for more. Not as funny as the first one, but still damn funny. Like the other one, there's about one joke thats really memorable, but the rest is alright too.

Whatever Wets Your Whistle

[mood: gah. exams.] [listening to: Hellogoodbye, Paul Gilbert]

Wii. Very very fun. Makes you want a wii doesn't it?

Anybody want to buy a drumset? Or know anyone who wants one. Someone willing to buy a kind of crappy one of course, for maybe uh 200 bucks? Or less, we can talk it over some tea. Yeah. It's not that great, but I mean if you just kind of want one and aren't too serious about getting some drums, these are for you. It's like the student violin of the drum world.

Listened to some Paul Gilbert today. I like him. In a I-think-his-stuff-is-cool way, not of course in a "Dude, wanna go out?" kind of way. Creator of the human capo and 3-string guitar set up.

I was looking around on colbertondemand.com and looked at top rated. This was number one. I have to say. He is like the coolest person on TV right now. I wish could sing like that lol. "And the rooooooo....."

[mood: schm':(((((ish?] [listening to: lvb]

Failing.
In other words, I'm probably going to fail my exams now.

So to give a little backstory, I was looking for a Wii at around Christmastime but knowing that I couldn't get one, I kinda gave up and was probably going to wait til the summer or something. But little did I know my dad didn't know Christmas ends December 26th. I woke up Sunday morning at around 1030-ish, deleted spam, then started reading digg when I hear my dad come home saying "Wii!" I was like "wtf?" But now you know. My dad's pretty cool. Party at my house. Look for a review filled with penis jokes soon.

  • Black Google - In a nutshell, Google could change their backgrounds and save the world millions of dollars. Why? The energy required to output an all-white page. All white-page dominance has reigned for too long. I call for a coalition to stop this white supremacy! Black power!

  • Really? - I have nothing better to put here? Really?

  • ROFFLECOPTER - I watched this last night and literally, I almost died. This has got to be one of the funniest things I've seen in my life. Like usual, I don't like ruining things. But wait til about 1:30 and it really starts getting good. I have never heard something like that ever, in my entire life.

Periodically: In a period.

[mood: schm':(((((ish?] [listening to: moz]

Random embellishments. Are they any good? In music? In design?

You could say the Tetris and Mario pieces are random embellishments, as well as the exclamation point in the disclaimer. Which, I have to change to MMVII after this. So are they any good? I noticed in February's issue of the newly redesigned Wired that there is a random red stripe in the middle of the spine. Is this a design choice? Absolutely. It was someone's job to come up with a design for the magazine, and he chose to create a random red stripe. It is nuances like these that I like in a design. The subtle yet obvious when you look hard enough. Pointless yet poignant at the same time.

So the Tetris and Mario pieces aren't really subtle. But you get my point.

I got facinated in the idea of Adobe Illustrator a few days ago after finding out from Krista what it was a few days ago. So I drew this tonight:

Six! Count them!
Don't mean to be politically incorrect but hey. I thought of it at random and wanted to do it. Illustrator >> Photoshop, I'm convinced now.

  • Its like drifting, but for boats - A series of pictures that tell the tale of a boat that has to go under an overpass that is too low for it. I'm not going to ruin it, but you'll see about mid way through the pictures why this guy should get a medal or something. At least a free meal.

  • Florida cops destroy homeless people's tents - In a coordinated city effort with Mayor approval, police officers in St. Petersburg, Florida, used boxcutters to slice through a tent city. Thats right, they didn't just haul them away, they slashed them to the point where they could not be used anymore. Then they hauled them away. Apparently, people were cooking and smoking in them so it created a fire hazard. I don't know where I stand on this. On one hand, the city absolutely has a right to get rid of fire hazards. But in this manner? On other people's property? What if someone went to your house and cut down one of your trees because it was a fire hazard? What happened to freedom and civil liberties? (see the last Daily for the answer) The police should have asked (or at worst, forced) these people to relocate their tents (as they did before) to a place where if there were a fire, it would be easily contained and would not cause any damage to the city. Blame the people in the tents for starting it.

  • Andy Griffith hates America - Obviously, he does not support Bush's wiretap program and wants terrorists to strike America again. Actually, this is what happened to freedom. This is a clip from the Andy Griffith show that sums up very well what is right and proper. Oh, how backwards we were back then. Its good to know that at least some time in our past, we knew how things should have done. Although, its a step in the right direction that Bush is going to the courts again for warrents. Seriously, the "but if it helps America and stops terrorism" kind of mentality is at its best Opie-ish.

[mood: schm':(((((ish?] [listening to: lvb]

This Thinkquest stuff is proving to be more time consuming than I thought. All I've been doing tonight is alternating between designing for Thinkquest and practicing like my 6 pieces that I need to learn. Make that 7. 2 solos, 2 duos, 1 hymn, 2 Classical pieces.

The odd thing is that I actually want to do these things. As in, I actually want to do work. Weird.

About the two Classical pieces. They're for the ODU Classical Competition in March. I'm winning. $1,000 first place and $600-some for second. Okay, so I probably won't win. The level I'm in is open for all high schoolers... and there are certainly people much better than me. People come from New York to compete in this thing. But I'm gonna try my ass off.

If that's the proper expression.

And as a caution, I'm going to start denying IPs this weekend. I've already started. So if all of a sudden, you can't access this site, tell me and I'll get you back on. I might have accidently blocked your IP, or someone is using yours as a mask. I've already accidently logged Eric's and Krista's IPs. I don't know how. Maybe they are masking. I only block repeats.

  • The farmer is small to fry king - The world of literal translations. Read the bottom six or so even if you don't read anything else. My favorite dish on the menu? "Every form rape." Sounds delicious.

  • Buy Sealand! - The Pirate Bay, the world's largest BitTorrent tracker, is tired of jurisdictions and getting nastygrams from the MPAA and the RIAA and more. So what do they propose to do? Buy Sealand. Sealand is a Principality off the coast of England that, according to some, is an independent, sovereign, nation. And what happens when The Pirate Bay buys its own country? Exactly. No one but themselves write laws and have proper jurisdiction in it. Help them out by donating some money. I would.

  • Bill O'Reilly on the Colbert Report - To be honest, I was a bit disappointed in this interview. Comedy Central and Colbert worked it up to be some sort of magical event, but it wasn't that great. The booing in the beginning and the awkward tensions betwen the two really kinda killed the mood. Probably the only part I actually laughed at in the interview was when they showed the book cover. Genius.

They're Daywalkers

[mood: :\ - hw and exams...] [listening to: Wolfmother, Arctic Monkeys]

The quote of the week. "They're daywalkers." When Jeff, Keia, Jessica, and I went to the mall on monday, Jessica and I were heading down to the theater on the escalator. We saw these 2 totally gothed out people and the one of the two guys behind us said "They're daywalkers." I died. Of laughter. Well not right there, but yeah, it was pretty damn funny. Another great mall moment was when I walked up to Jessica [Est-ur-ez] and said "Hey Jessica!" and scared the crap out of her.

I have lots of makeup work to do tonight which sucks. Exams are coming up. Which sucks. I got like all my hair cut off. Which sucks.

I was surfing the net over the weekend and found some interesting little things. Such as this. I guess the Wii can be used for games targeted toward older audiences too. A fun site on my magical journey through the internets was size easy, where you can compare the sizes of stuff which dimensions you type in. It is intended for comparing product sizes that you like find online, but of course, people are going to do things like make charts of reproductive organ sizes. Or maybe that's just me. Don't say you didn't think about making a "my package" vs "your package" chart...

Did you know?
-That dear old Nikholas is in this video.
-It changes when the sun goes down.
-When the time is right and the night is bright, we will see the things we've come to find.
-We can find the mind's eye if we try.
-The psychiatrist is posing as psychologist.
-I fell down in the desert, baby? Yeah. I had nothing but a piece of a paper. Oooooo yeah. I had to write something down.
-She doesn't do major credit cards. I doubt she does receipts. It's all not quite legitimate.
-All I've got is a dirty trick. I'm chasing down the wolves to save you.
-I have nothing to write here but song lyrics?

I guess I could make this fun and ask what all these bands have in common. If you give the answer I'm looking for, you may be rewarded. Possibly.

  • ANGER!!! - Read the article out loud with a straight face. I dare you. I really like the picture that goes with the article. The doctor's saying "ooh, so thats what it looks like."

  • AT&T - Once again, Steven Colbert's truthiness shines through. He puts the mergers and divisions and remerges of AT&T and BellSouth and the like in a very concise manner that anyone can understands. I for one welcome our new relatively old telecommunications overlords.

Puh oh.

[mood: schm'aggrevated] [listening to: lvb]

You may notice comment spam shoot up in the coming days... significantly. I removed the security check which I thought didn't work... and what do you know. Comment spam shoots up by at least 500%. I'm no expert mathematician... but I'm sure that a 500% increase in comment spam constitutes (with a y < 0 restriction, of course) a case of BATSHIT CRAZY.

But now, I'm collecting IP addresses. I finally figured out how. So far, out of 20 or so comments I've deleted only about 2 or 3 IPs have been repeats. I currently have a list of 15 IPs I'm going to put on my banlist. Once these IPs are banned, no more comment spam. But knowing these networks, they'll find a way. So I will single-handedly ban all the spammers. One by one.

This way, there won't be an annoying security check. 121.144.62.243... I'm coming after you. Soon, this will be you:

HAHAHAHA

Hasta la vista.

And curiously enough... I just plugged in one of the repeating IPs (60.217.227.135) into my browser and it actual returned a Chinese webpage, 17cube. Could 17cube be spamming me with Cialis and Florida vacation commercials? Or are these spammers hijacking these computers? The mystery grows deeper.

  • We've all asked the question. - What exactly goes on in Hugh Hefner's bedroom? And now we have the answers. A whole bunch of... "cheerleading." An interesting and very informative interview with a former Playmate. Oh, just in case some of you are oblivious to the obvious, this has sexually explicit material. But you guys are smart enough to know that and not try to access this on a school computer or anything.

  • Lost ends!! - Okay, well, Lost doesn't exactly end, but we now know that there are plans for a definitive series finale date. Yeah, series finale. The producers feel that with a definitive date, fans will be more confident in the storyline and that it will eventually lead somewhere: a strong conclusion. I'll admit, I really would have liked to see more of Hugo and the Scottish guy the half-season ending in November... but I guess thats coming soon in a few weeks.

  • Terrific college lecture prank - I'm not going to ruin anything... but I'm just going to say that this production is nothing short of amazing. I hope this happens wherever I go to college. Although its weird how the teacher kinda goes "oh, here comes another one..." and smiles it off and sits back for the show.

So... (wow, 3 lines in this post start with "so")

[mood: schm':(((((ish?] [listening to: dc]

So, we're back. You should be noticing that things are somewhat smoother and faster, thanks to a dedicated Grid/Container solution from mediatemple.

And you can safely visit http://theblacktop.com now instead of hublog.theblacktop.com because I figured out how to do the rerouting.

So expect a little facelift soon. Or maybe not-so-soon. Before, my target was this weekend, but now, seeing as this weekend has come and gone, I'm shooting for mid-February. I'll likely miss that too so I'll project for March 11, 2007, when Hublog turns 3. Or 3 and 9 months if you live in the Vatican. Or 3 and 10 months if you count thinking about doing it as conception.

So many good candidates for Dailies I've found recently... so at least I won't have to go digging for more on a light day. I'll post four tonight. As always, best is last.

Oh, but I have to post this outside of the Dailies. I accidently stumbled across the video when I was on Youtube today when Sonia friended me... and I was thrown back shocked. I never ever want to stumble upon something like this again. I'd say its worth a good laugh... but not really. A mediocre chuckle? A flaccid attempt at one?

  • Le Grand Content - There is just something about student productions that stike a nerve in me. Maybe its cause this site is more-or-less a student production and I like to see what other people are doing. This is a student film making a mockery of today's society, and it does a damn fine job at it. It has no video footage, only very slick animations. Some points are more subtle and only the intelligent (which means most of you guys, i hope) can pick up. It was heavily inspired by the blog indexed, yet another college student production. You ought to read indexed everyday along with this site.

  • Lol - Lol. And one more for good measure.

  • Heart attack - Rush Hour 3!!! I hope to God this is better than any of Jackie's recent five movies or so, starting with the Tuxedo.

  • Why Diggnation rules - Diggnation is a weekly web broadcast hosted by Kevin Rose, the founder of digg and Alex Albrecht, another tech personality. And why is it awesome? Because its two grown men getting drunk and acting like us, all while talking about news and things that we wanna hear. Just take a look at this clip. I've talked about it before, but this clip takes the cake and you'll enjoy it. Well, the guy's at least. 90% of diggers are male. =\.

We're back

[mood: -ish] [listening to: dvorak]

We're back online! In case you haven't noticed.

After a day or so of downtime, Hublog is back on a better, faster server. This time, this site has its own dedicated container on a mediatemple Grid Server. You don't have to know what that means, you only have to know that it means we'll have less frequent downtime and things should be noticably faster from here on.

I thought that switching servers, keeping the same domain, and transferring a carbon copy of the site+database would be hasslesome, but it wasn't that bad. A few hiccups and now we're back online.

I hit my target of Sunday afternoon, but this site actually might not get up until Sunday night because of domain/DNS stuff. I need to figure out how to point the Rails app to my doman's root directory, so you may not actually read this until Sunday night or Monday afternoon. But look at the post time.

Weren't we hearing just weeks ago cries of 'listen to the Baker Commission!" and "we need a new direction!"? If liberals haven't got the idea, the president's move is a compromise that attempts to satisfy everyone.

Simply put, some want out and some want to stay there. This move balances out these desires because it's a short term increase for the purpose of getting us out within a year.

But then again, negation theory, right? Even if it means contradicting themselves, liberals have to disagree with everything he says. It works out for them, because they just increase the anti-Bush tension. Just don't try bullshitting me into thinking that you're trying to be "bi-partisan," Pelosi.

However, some of the republicans who dissent are scaring me. I mean, they have freedom of expression as much as I do, but i do have some lurking suspicions, exemplified by this CBS News article:

"I think this speech given last night by this president represents the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam, if it's carried out," Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., a potential 2008 presidential contender, told Rice.

Is he distancing himself from Bush so that he can run for President? Because he sure as hell just scared away any support that he would have gotten from me. In ebonics, "Fuck you, cracka."

Bottom line, it's never enough with them. Never. Not until we enslave white people. Because it's all about them. Let's help the poor, so they'll vote for us.

But that's just me being nasty. And by the way, in case anyone was wondering, I do enjoy being the rebel. I understand what it was like for Democrats back in the 60's and 70's.

I can't do anything. You needed to see for yourself. You chose the consequences.

I need to find a more productive use of staying up late on school nights. Like doing homework.

[mood: Zzz] [listening to: Red Jumpsuit Apparatus]

Have you ever looked at someone and wondered what they were like as a child? Actually, even before that, as a toddler or new-born. Well, I think about it sometimes and find it kind of crazy how different we become as we age. When people are first born, we are all essentially the same. [Except for like obvious stuff, like if you were born without a 3rd testicle, which by the way you should get checked out if you only have 2. Why? Cuz that's just weird.] Another thing is, is there anything on our minds when we are born? Are we all truly blank slates at birth? Our thoughts and attitudes, are they molded by nature or nurture? We have yet to know. [It would probably be relatively simple to do some experiments to find out, but I think there are laws against inhumane treatment of people. Although, inhumane is a relative term...] Well I am going to stick to my thoughts of how we are relatively blank slates. I mean, as babies, there is no racism or judgement of others. You haven't been in the world long enough to develop any opinions on anything. Well, as we grow, our minds become more composed. We develop thoughts, judgments, opinions, ideas, tastes, etc. As this growth progresses, so does the growth of the dividers between us. We branch further and further away from each other. We leave the clique and form our own identity. New cliques form. Groups split. All that good stuff. Thus, diffusion.

I had some point to that whole diffusion concept, but I lost it when I lost my post in a browser crash, much like Mr. Hu.

Time for some geeking out. The anime for Bleach has finally ended its filler arc, which was actually pretty good. The last few episodes of the arc kicked ass. Well that's maybe just because I read the manga and can see all the foreshadowing and chiasmi being used. Anyways, when episode 110 comes out this week, the original storyline will resume. Which will totally. kick. ass. Also, February 15th. What is the significance of the date? All you nerds out there should know. Of all the readers here, probably just Nikholas.

What kind of name is Red Jumpsuit Apparatus?

David has his dailies. I shall start my own "Did you know?" section.
Did you know?
-Some 17 year old created nuclear fusion in his basement?
-Ctrl+Shift+t recovers tabs you closed in firefox?
-Night at the Museum is a really good movie?
-Eating sushi in the movie theater is fun?
-Jay Chou can actually be understood in his new song [which kicks ass]? [As opposed to his Chinese in songs like this one. The song kicks ass, but you can't really understand it. By that I mean even Chinese people can't really understand him without looking up the lyrics. Then you get it. Anyways. I have really grown to like the man and his music.]

Ads and the iPhone

[mood: schm':(((((] [listening to: lvb]

So a few days ago I lost a post because my browser crashed (damned safari...), so now I'm going to attempt to recreate the most important announcement I had on it. I just hope I can recreate the Jobsesque charisma.

So, changes are coming. A new iteration of Hublog is underday. Its not going to be an entire backend overhaul, only a simple facelift, new looks. So I'm going to call it Hublog 6i2, for Hublog 6, interation 2, since you guys seemed fond of the Hublog name as opposed to 9legged. It will be around these parts in mid to late February.

A major change coming with Hublog 6i2, though. The introduction of advertising on Hublog. Yeah, I've thought about it for a long time, and now its finally happening. More money into this site means better services. You wait a few weeks and see what more money can buy (read: new, faster servers). However, these aren't going to be your run-of-the-mill Google ads. No. These are going to be your ads.

So here's the deal. Every week, I'm going to be auctioning off prime real estate on Hublog 6i2. Believe me, when I say prime real estate, it means everyone's going to see it. Its going to be much like Parth's advertisements for Homecoming, only they will be less obtrusive and won't compromise aspects of the site (like the title). You can put whatever you want on this real estate, so long as its appropriate. Links, text, shoutouts, big bold letters, whatever. Of course, the bigger space the message takes up, the more its going to cost you.

Starting rates will be 5¢ (5 cents) for simple text ads and 10¢ (10 cents) for ads with graphics (i recommend the services of a certain mr. nikolas if you want graphics made). Of course, the bigger space you take up, the greater the starting rate will be. But everything is up for negotiation. So, once you've locked in your bid for 5 or 10 cents (or more), you're ad is going up the following week. Unless of course, someone else outbids you. Highest bid wins.

New ads ("sponsers," if you will) go up every Sunday. So basically you have the entire week to talk to me and work something out. And remember your audience here. You're looking at an average of over 30 visits a day and just under 1000 visits a month1, so you know these ads'll get attention. And these aren't just random people, these are your peers and people who would actually care about these things you post, whether they may be ads for sites or just big bold letters that say "democrats ftw."

But bear in mind, this is just a little experiment to see if something like this could possibly work. Consider it in beta, if you will. And anyone interested being Hublog 6i2's first sponser, get in touch with me.

  • iPhone - Screw the Wii60. I'm getting an iPhone. One look at this thing and you'll be sold. Built-in wifi, widescreen video ipod, EDGE, internet, mail, widgets, and more. Oh, and its going to be an entirely touch-based interface. No buttons. All touch. Well, except for a few buttons like setting the volume and ringer style. But basically, its being marketed as a widescreen touch video ipod with phone and internet capabilities. 4GB at $500. Count me in. Anyone want an unlocked RAZR V3i + a blue ipod mini + a black ipod nano for $500? I'll even throw in some Altoids and a wireless optical mouse by Microsoft. Although, one gripe I have against the phone is its battery life. 5 hours of video/talk/internet is abysmal. So you watch two movies on the plane and listen to your music for the rest of the way... and it dies. What if someone has to call you? Exactly. You're screwed. What I really want out of it is a "minimum talk time" settings feature. Hypothetically this feature will allow you to use the other features on the phone for as long as you want, until the batteries drain to like 20% (or whever you set it to), where you can get about 1.5 hrs of minimum talk time where you can't do anything else unless you override the feature. Then I'd be totally sold. But enough nerdery. So now for some awesome other Dailies. Oh, usually, the best Dailies are last. But this time its first. Actually, only two Dailies today. I'm tired and still have homework to do.

  • The teacher said "make a funny face" - lol. (bottom left for you blind people)

Thoughts on Berkeley

[mood: schm':(((((ish?] [listening to: lvb]

Woke up late, did relatively nothing. Productive day, I'd say. I was actually done with most of my homework by 4. I'm proud.

I want to address something now that I'd usually put as a Daily. Little Asia on the Hill is an article in the NYTimes that is focused on UCBerkeley's overwhelming 46% Asian population. Its a fantastic read and I recommend everyone going through it. It brings up some interesting points on racial equality, meritocracy, creating a diverse environment, and, of course, Affirmative Action. Asians are only 12% of California's population but make up a very large chunk, 37%, a majority, of its higher education institutions.

I found these quotes particularily interesting:

Asians are typecast in college admissions offices as quasi-robots programmed by their parents to ace math and science.
"You could argue that the campus is more diverse now," because Asians comprise so many different cultures, says Dr. Hollinger. A little more than half of Asian freshmen at Berkeley are Chinese, the largest group, followed by Koreans, East-Indian/Pakistani, Filipino and Japanese.
"You hear some teachers say that the Asian kids get great grades but just sit there and don't participate," she says. "Talking and thinking are not the same thing. Being a student to some Asians means that it's not your place to question, and that flapping your gums all day is not the best thing."
The story of Jon Lee's journey at Berkeley is compelling. As president of the Asian-American Association, he has tried to dispel stereotypes of "the Dragon Lady seductress or the idea that everybody plays the piano."

I found the last one particularily humorous. Dragon Lady seductress all the way.

My views? I don't think they should be placing racial quotas, obviously. I've been seriously looking to Berkeley as an option for a while now and if they begin placing racial quotas or cutoffs, it means I'll have to score higher on tests and get a higher GPA (although, surprisingly, the median SAT for berkeley is only 1975... i got an 1840, easily brought up). However, I do find it alarming what transpires naturally when no artificial restraints are put in place. The article poses an interesting question: is the future of American in Asians and the upper white class? I hope not. California will soon turn into an extention of China and Korea if this continues to happen. Or isn't it already?

On a totally different topic, look for http://d.aweed.us soon. Nothing will be on there except a CV of sorts probably but at least I can finally have another place to put other files that aren't Hublog-related. I'm kinda tired of putting everything in theblacktop.com. I want to save this for only production-ready material. That means Hublog... and possibly another project after that. Stay tuned. You heard it here first.

  • The Simpsonzu - Genius at art draws the Simpsons in the style of anime. No, not the Sailor Moon kind of anime style, but the other kind of rougher, more jagged. Can't really cite an example, but maybe Akira? Maybe one of your anime nerds out there can tell me.

  • Brokeback Mountain and anal douches - No comment. Just look at what customers buying anal douches also bought.

  • Credit card information sent over AIM - Contrary to popular belief, AOL IM sessions are not secure and anyone can read them, easily. So this guy submits credit card information over AIM. Damn secure, I might say. Its a good read; and it might soon turn into a cult classic. Nothing like P-P-P-Powerbook though. Damn, thats a pain in the ass to type.

Kingdom of awesomeness

[mood: schm':(((((ish?] [listening to: lvb]

Look for a new design... coming soon. I'll be switching hosts at the end of the month and hopefully (keeping my fingers crossed) things will transition smoothly then. If not, there might be a period of downtime the weekend after exams. Things are tight for me because my hosting here expires January 26th, and thats the first day we have off. So there might be some downtime that weekend if things don't go smoothly. If things go smoothly, I'll transition early next weekend when we have MLK day off to work a little bit.

I'll probably miss the redesign deadline with the server switch but hey, no one's perfect. Although, maybe I should start to embrace the 37signals philosophy of "deliver half, not half-assed." As in, deliver half of a good product rather than one full half-assed project. 37signals. Wouldn't it be awesome to work there?

  • Tape on a cat - Um. Well, the title's pretty self-explanatory. Tape on a cat. Funny stuff.

  • Finally, someone acknowledging Chinese traffic - And how much it sucks to sit in traffic for 45 minutes with the meter running. I think the picture on the page tells a better story than I ever could.

  • Momofuku Ando dies at age 96 - Better known as the inventor of the Cup Noodle. We will miss you. But your legacy will live on through poor kids in college.

  • Oh dear... - Four Dailies tonight. Couldn't resist putting this up. A Chinese teenager hangs himself after meeting his blind date on the internet. I'm not vain or anything like that... but that had to be one ugly girl. Imagine living with that on your concious for the rest of your life.

Alla marcia

[mood: schm':(((((ish] [listening to: lvb]

The entire fifth (well, actually the second half of the fourth but its essentially the fifth) movement of Beethoven's Ninth can't even fit in itunes. Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, "Choral" - V - Presto/recitative: "O Freunde" - Allegro assai: "Freude, schöner Götterfunken" - Alla marcia - Allegro assai vivace: "Froh, wie seine Sonnen" - Andante maestoso: "Seid umschlungen, Millionen!" - Prestissimo: "Seid umschlungen, Millionen!" should be the full name (the undereducated call it "Ode to Joy.") itunes goes to like the first Millionen. I'll tell you what, if you have a song that can't fit into itunes... thats pure genius.

I've been getting little sleep these past days. Isn't it fun how our teachers load us with work the week we come back? Awesome.

Now for some fun, the Dailies. I'm gonna capitalize it now to reduce confusion. As always, the best one is last. But you guys know that.

  • Wii vs. Gamecube - My conclusion: The Wii is technically lacking, and the Gamecube has yet to have enough goods to even be "technically lacking." I like it how the site said that the Gamecube was as powerful as the PS2. Whatsup, Pikmin?

  • Help! There's a bug on my screen - Oh, I mean, in my screen. Some how this bug managed to get into this guy's monitor. Damn funny.

  • Oh dear lord! Bees! - Good Christ. A series of pictures about an invasion of bees in someone's home. Basically, a swarm of thousands of bees escape from some other house and gathered in this guy's sister's backyard swingset. Just click. The pictures speak for themselves. I hope to God this never happens in my backyard. Actually, a huge fireball in my backyard would be kinda cool, sorta, I guess.

From the New World

[mood: schm':(((((ish?] [listening to: dvorak, gasp]

So, here's to a new year. For starting fresh. I don't know about you guys, but for me, fresh starts don't come until Lost begins again or until school starts again in the fall.

I guess as a little new years gift to you guys, I'll get rid of the comment math checker when I can. It really doesn't stop spam. I have found better ways to combat spam.

  • .002 cents vs .002 dollars - The premise of this is quite interesting. A guy who recently moved to Canadia asks for the rate of UMTS/EDGE/generic network for internet in Canada from Verizon. The rep tells him its ".002 cents per kilobyte." Sweet deal. Read it again. .002 cents per kilobyte. Instead, he gets charged .002 dollars per kilobyte. His bill should be around $.79 but instead its around $79. Wow. Read his story, its quite interesting. Not as good as a P-P-P-Powerbook, but still nearing a classic.

    • Followup: Check to Verizon - As a little mini-followup for the first Daily, check out this check to Verizon. I almost spilt my drink over my monitor it made me laugh so hard. Even funnier is the fact that the check is still valid.

  • wtf is this? - A phallic object with eyeballs. Wow. I want to know who the hell was in charge of marketing at Microsoft and went "Jesus H. Christ. We need a penis with eyeballs! These things'll sell like hotcakes!" (in the best lewis black voice you can). Just watch it. And try not to question. And you might not want to take a drink of something before you see this either, you might risk a chance of ruining your monitor.

  • Workfriendly.net - And for you kids out there who want to do things other than homework in study hall. Just enter a URL into the bar, and it will automatically generate the page in a Microsoft Word template to make it seem like you are actually working on... well, work. It gets rid of all images and styling, but it gets the job done. Does a dandy job of rendering this site (thanks to standards-compliant code, i must add). Even has a handy "boss" button which automatically generates an entire paper on procrastination. Mmm. I can smell the irony.
