Moviegasm/Land of the Rising Sun

[mood: :D] [listening to: MAXIMUM THE HORMONE]

I had some random post material stored up for a while so this is going to be a big one.

Enjoy.

I think that the writer's strike had something to do with it, but a lot of movies that were announced quite a while ago have taken forever to be released. Like Jumper. Man I wanted to see that so bad when the trailer first came out. When it finally came out I just ejaculated [metaphorically]. [btw it was a good movie. Don't listen to David, he's crazy.] Also I think Charlie Bartlett has been released? I've waited so long for that movie. We even got some preview tickets for the film a couple of months ago [before thanksgiving], but I couldn't go :(. After 4 months, it's finally out! Also, Be Kind Rewind is also out. Man. Mos Def and Jack Black? That's epic. I am so stoked. Death at a Funeral is finally coming out on DVD. Along with the aforementioned films, this is like passionately making out with Jessica Alba and Megan Fox comes in and asks to join. First you look at your partner and see if it's ok. She smiles. "Hell yes." she says. Then while the three of you are wrestling around in your underwear, Heidi Klum comes in [without Seal. Dear God, no.] and everything stops for a moment. Silence. A moment later, without a single spoken word, it's agreed. She's coming in. Yeah, it's just like that. Man, just thinking about these movies is getting me aroused.

Yeah, I like movies.

No clue if I've ever posted this before.
Either way, it's an old classic tune. A personal favorite of Andrew Lampella and me.
The Pirate Song.
I started getting into the song again after I got Microsoft Office for my mac.
At a discounted price.

I hope my child will be this talented at this age.
Heyyyy Juuuuuuude

With more free time on my hands [and lower homework grades] I've been getting back into Anime and stuff. I've been checking out some newer and more recent series that I've been wanting to check out. One of these series is Elfen Lied [title's based off a German poem of the same name]. It was pretty kick ass. It's only a short, 13 episode long series [:(] but it's a good one. Aside from Nik, I doubt anyone here is too into anime, but if you are ever curious, I would recommend you check it out. At your own risk. It's pretty violent. Lots of blood. Lots of dying. Nudity. Not for the faint of heart. Especially if you get attached to characters easily. Not a good idea. A lot of them die. Either way, it's great. It's hard to pinpoint a genre for it since it has major characteristics of so many different anime genres. I would say it's something like a mix of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Love Hina/Ah! My Goddess, AKIRA, and something like Wolf's Rain. Know what I mean? No? Well in laymen terms it's something like a mix of AWESOME with AWESOME with a side of AWESOME and AWESOME for dessert. If you like crazy action. Check it out. If you like harem anime. Check it out. If you like crazy psychological stuff. Check it out. If you like naked anime chicks. Check it out. Also, if you like the artwork of Klimt. Check it out. The opening and closing sequences are great tributes to his art.

Speaking of great anime, I previously mentioned Akira. Never seen it?
You should. It's classic. Fo sho. Or if this follows through you could check out the most-likely shitty remake. A live action remake.
Blasphemy.
Everyone knows you can't make anime live action without it looking blah [unless it's Deathnote, the live action remake was pretty good and it had RHCP so it's all good]. PROOF
That is, unless there are professional models involved. Indeed.
Haha. Sorry, Nik. Here's something to make up for it :D

Well, speaking of Death Note, the 2nd set of opening and closing sequences were accompanied by the music of a Japanese band called Maximum the Hormone. No lie.
On a separate note, the Dropkick Murphys are having a US tour coming up soon. Well, Maximum the Hormone is touring with Dropkick Murphys. Carazay. Awesome. But Carazay. Not only because they are a Japanese rock band touring America with a well known band [this actually happens often], but if you click the link and watch their music video, you'll see why it's carazay. Crazy genre difference. Whatever genre MtH is. But I guess there are people out there like me who like to listen to both bands.
If you like them, here's one of my favorite songs by them chu chu lovely muni muni mura mura purin purin boron nururu rero rero <- yeah, that's the song title.

Speaking of Japanese music, I just had to share this with you guys. The opening sequence to one of my favorite anime series. Hellsing. Gotta love that piano and the gibberish lyrics. Gotta give credit to the Hellsing OST composer Yasushi Ishii. That anime has some good music.

Speaking of Japanese composers,

Nobou Uematsu ftw.

Nuff said.

Electroplankton + iPhones. Pretty cool. Although near the end/halfway through it 1) kind of loses novelty [ie - gets boring/annoying] 2) loses rhythm [apparently no one can count.]

And if you haven't heard already,
Yeah, I got the job at Hollister.
So everyone can get the "OMGDISCOUNTS" out of their system now.

Rehearsed Individual Oral Talk

[mood: cold.] [listening to: the killers]

Get it? RIOT! As opposed to a FIOP. I kinda prefer RIOT.

I've been getting very behind on deadlines. I haven't turned in my Stanford Summer app, I need to get cracking on my IAs, I have SATs again next weekend, and other things. This does not bode well. Oh and then there's a little story about a Russian girl. That too.

Sorry if the "content" section of my posts have been a bit light lately.

Every time I enter this house I want to leave.

  • [PICTURE] Coolness - Every time I walk into an Abercrombie or store of the like, I take pride in "unpopping" all of the collars that are raised for some reason or another. So this kinda makes me cringe and want to shoot myself in the foot. But hey. At least he can match his colors. As if it were that difficult.

  • [ARTICLE] 20 Things I Wish I Had Known When Starting Out in Life - Kids, listen up. That's a grown man talking. Besides a picture that is creepily reminiscent of The Shining, this is basically advice for us youngin's who are just "starting out" in life. This information is good and all to digest, but like he says, we're probably going to make the same mistakes. So this is basically a list of "Things that will happen, unless you avoid them, but you probably won't, so brace yourself" but I like his title better.

  • [ARTICLE] "I've done it with a girl. Intercourse-wise. - From the mouth of Harry Potter himself. Don't let the queer beginning fool you. The whole thing is really worth the watch. And yeah. I can't really explain the connection between Boy Scouts and elves, either.

I don't want to go home right now

[mood: alright.] [watching: goo goo dolls]

Have you ever had those weird "just right" moments? I had one just now. Going through the TV channel guide, I saw that the Goo Goo Dolls were playing on MTVHD. I was like "hey, i'm obsessed with Iris, i hope that's what they're playing, even though i know its probably not." And what do you know? They're playing Iris right now. Huh. Weird, isn't it?

So I stayed up til 4:30 reading Anna K Thursday morning. Slept for about 50 minutes, woke up, showered, then found out that school was delayed. What kind of crap is that? I could have slept for 2 more hours.

May cut my hair soon.

I think 90% of the songs on my ipod are from 2004 or earlier. Kinda depressing. I still like the songs though.

The following are Dailies.

  • [VIDEO] Cop confronts a teenage skater - The latest sensation exploiting law enforcement hitting the web. Not to defend the cop or anything (he was pretty much a douche), but I don't really get the obsession with these kinds of videos. I stumble upon about one or two every month. Don't these cops ever learn?

  • [ARTICLE] You just... can't - Kinda like the thing with going backwards with your hands. Try this one at home. I don't really get why the article looks like handwritten scribbles, though.

  • [VIDEOS] You suck at Photoshop Part 1 (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6) - A bunch of Photoshop tutorials. I won't tell you what the twist to this series is, but they're really worth the watch.

[mood: :) / D: ANNAK] [listening to: ni ting bu dong la.]

Bass.
Basss.
Bassssss.

YES! BIG BANG IS BACK!

B to the I to the Bang Bang!
B to the I to the Bang Bang!

Man. That song kicks ass.
And the guy in the video.
Fucking pimp.

Sorry, but I love you, ko-rean ko-re-an!

Are you ready? Everybody stand up aweraweraw ichiban awerlawer speed hunter. Heaewraewkjl heroes come back, everybody make some noise!

Bikinis. Lots of them. On Asian chicks. With water. Lots of it. Nuff said.

Go! with the FLOW

Yeah, I've been listening to a lot of Asian music again. Especially Big Bang [Last Farewell ftw]. Good stuff. Probably even better if I could understand it, but lyrics be damned, these songs are awesome without even knowing what they're saying. Totally different from what we have here. I remember reading part of a study a while ago that said that the natural rhythms in language greatly affect the how songs are written in different cultures, which is why J-Pop is J-Pop and... Ameri-pop is Ameri-pop. Interesting stuff.

...and just for kicks.

For Your Enjoyment

[mood: yawn] [listening to: Wolfmother]

Well, the epic black card videos are up on facebook now. Now you can witness the pain we experienced with this game here and here. Enjoy. Quick warning though. You might want to turn down the volume due to foul language, loud explosions, nasty sounds, and our stupidity.

For those of you pious little angels that gave up Facebook, here are two highlights uploaded onto youtube. You're welcome. :D
BOOM!
Mmmmmm... [Watch Alex Ung in this one]
Same aforementioned warnings apply to these videos too.

Resuscitation

[mood: bl/meh] [listening to: Maroon 5]

So I've been messing around with my new macbook and have been catching up with the happenings of the internets. When visiting collegehumor I came across a trailer for what seems like another great comedy featuring many of my favorite actors. Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Wiki says April 18th for release date. [btw that's the same date THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM is scheduled for release, which btw stars Jackie Chan AND Jet Li. Hell. Yes. TFK]

While reacquainting myself with the internets, people began to start going crazy about those "gossip blogs" or whatever you would like to call them. I'm surprised how quickly they were taken down after Mrs. Cox's words. I thought that they would last at least a while longer since it seemed like it was built on a strength in numbers kind of basis, a "one of is isn't as powerful as all of us" kind of thing. I guess not. Someone is worried about their IB diploma. Well, I'm just surprised it died so quickly.
Well.
What's done is done.

So how has your weekend been?
I know mine has been pretty fun.
And painful.
On Saturday, I went to watch Strange Wilderness with Antonio, Eric & Alex Ma, Alex Ung, and Mike Chen. Pretty good movie. Just ask Eric Ma or Antonio, because they saw it with me. The other three got caught for trying to sneak into a Rated R film. Haha. They had to go watch Meet the Spartans instead.

Well afterwards we went to Antonio's Uncle's house, AKA our hangout, and played lots of Wii. [That wii Naruto game is kick ass.] Well after we tired out our wrists we decided to cool off with a fun game. We played the black card game or something. It's name isn't the important thing, it's the game itself. There are 6 cards, one for each of us and all of them are face cards aside from one, which is a joker. This joker is of course the "black card." Well we all draw cards and whoever draws the joker has to undergo the punishment prescribed for that round. Yeah, we're retarded. Let me list some of the things we drew cards for: Slap in the face from everybody, slap in the back from everyone, eat wasabi rolls x2,x3, walk on pinecones barefoot, flour cannon.

We did the wasabi rolls the most because we had 12 pieces. Antonio got the worst of it because he ended up drawing the card for it twice, once for 3 pieces, and once for 2 pieces [but we were merciful and let him settle with 1]. In the end it didn't matter since we all tried one. Note to everyone in the world: DON'T EVER EAT A WASABI ROLL. O my god. It's a fucking terrible experience. I tried covering it with ginger and soaking it in soy sauce, and trust me, it DOESN'T DO SHIT TO HELP. Let me try and describe hell in words. Well you first put it in your mouth and chew around a bit. It's not bad, maybe 2-3 bites in you start feeling it burn a little and you get that intense feeling in your nose. That's when things start going straight downhill. It burns a little, then your nasal cavity becomes a fucking inferno. That's when you start screaming out for help. But no one can hear you over the sushi in your mouth. Then during your panic you begin to think "O GOD WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS!!! I WAS ONLY OFFERING THAT CHILD SOME CANDY!!!!" Well after you have abandoned supernatural help, you start thinking of a way to get out of this yourself. You start thinking, "All this pain is coming from this wasabi. The more I have in my mouth, the more it hurts. How can I get rid of it without spitting it out...?" That's where you come to the logical conclusion: swallow it. With a determined look on your face, you try to ignore the pain and focus on trying to swallow the wretched substance in your mouth. You close your eyes and swallow. BIG MISTAKE. Once the first chunk of wasabi hits the back of your throat, an unexplainable pain hits you. It's somewhat like a combination between gagging and having a knife covered in tabasco sauce stab you in the throat. When that first gagging spasm moves your body, another one follows, then you desperately try to get the wasabi out of your throat. Nothing helps. What do you do now? Your instincts kick in and you find something to drink. [When in this stage don't ever go for Capri Sun, trust me. The straw is far from big enough, and the tiny drops of juice flowing into your mouth are more mocking of your pain than helpful.] Well as you start drinking whatever liquids you can find you'll soon find out that, much like the soy sauce, it hardly does anything to help, if not make it worse [ask Ung]. Well your only option now is to persevere until the end. Chewing, swallowing, gagging, and dying. Then when you finish, that gag reflex remains. In the end, your throat and stomach feel absolutely terrible. And the after party isn't so great either. And if you're Antonio, you throw up. In conclusion: from beginning to end, wasabi rolls belong on a level of damnation close to that of Furbies.

Also, did I mention it tastes like shit?

Well we got video of all our escapades and they'll be uploaded to the Chinese Stooges group on Facebook soon. Great footage. You can see all the wasabi consumption and pain we went through. You can also see what is probably the best footage we have ever taken: the video of Alex Ma being hit by the flour cannon [which is our Potato Cannon loaded up with flour wrapped in tissue paper]. Trust me, that footage is great.

On a more pleasant note [well for some people] Valentine's Day is on the horizon.
A time of romance, young love, oil, cream, and latex consumption, and capitalism. It's a time of happiness and glee. It's a day of great times, but also bad decisions. You really have to be careful what you do. When you young ones are all out there on Valentine's day, forn copu fu having a great time, remember this one thing: Save a tree. Swallow. Don't let your carelessness lead to homelessness for the forest creatures.

Standing on the edge of me

[mood: quiet. reflective. anxious. a lot like an ST.] [watching: mythbusters]

Oh, whoa. You guys are still here.

Eric, feel free join me in the "I'm cool because I'm at Starbucks with my Mac working on a novel" club.

So I'm the only ST (sensory-thinker) in my TOK class. ISTP, to be exact. An introverted, senses-reliant, thinking perceiver. And despite how much I hate typecasting (in the social sense), I can't help but notice how well the ISTP fits me. Especially the part about the "occasional" lashes of humor. Well said, well said. Its a bit intimidating that everyone else in my class are feelers. Although when I took a fuller version of the test online, I got complete opposites on EVERYTHING but the thinking: ENTJ. I guess I'm stuck having no feelings or emotions.

What did you guys get?

So yesterday I volunteered at Love Run, showing up ridiculously and unnecessarily early. After being in the cold for a long time, I ate some lunch with some folks, and went home. And napped. Til around 6. Then I went out to run some errands, got some food, and came home. And napped. Til around 6. AM. So I went to bed and napped again. Til 9. In nine words or less: I am seriously deprived of sleep.

And now the sky is playing tricks on me because the wind keeps blowing clouds in front of the sun and then away. And then in front. And then away.

I should be reading Anna K. Or practicing scales. Amongst other things.

I feel like this post has been random topics stitched together without any heed to transitions. Emulates my mind right now, sort of.

This is a transition into the Dailies.

Daaaaaang.

[mood: :\] [listening to: Blink-182]

Wow. It's been a while hasn't it? Well to whet your appetites, I am making a real short post. My macbook should come in tomorrow afternoon [!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!], so then I will have a computer again where I can do stuff. So yeah.

Well today we went to the Pagoda in Norfolk to perform zither for this Chinese New Year-ish dinner thing. Seemed pretty fancy. We had to play a one hour set. A lot more fun than I expected. A great experience. A lot of the people there really enjoyed our music and were just really nice overall. And also we got lots of free food and we're getting paid for this. Well anyways the good part comes in later, when we finished packing up the zithers and we were eating, the next part of the entertainment for the night started. Belly dancing. Hell yes. Well I believe that's what it was, with all the undulating motions, gyrating hips, exposed midriffs, occasional winks. I just have to say this now. That girl was not too bad at dancing. And not too bad looking. But the best part of the performance was that my friend Bexely was sitting in a chair and I was standing behind him, and what ended up happening was that she just started dancing up on him and bumping him off the chair. And Bexely makes some hilarious awkward faces. Made my day. She also danced near this one dude and he gave her the eyebrows. Bow chika wow wow. Another great part was Jeanette [the crazy 10 year old] said to her "You're really flexible" and then she winked at Jeanette. Good stuff.

Well. You just had to be there. Ask me about it and I'll tell you more. And sorry Nik, and all you other guys, I didn't get any pictures :\ Too busy eating. In fact, in almost every picture people took of her, you can probably see me eating. Seriously.

Doubt.

[mood: tired] [listening to: KT Tunstall]

We all want things we don't have. However, who's to say you can't have it? Who says you can't ever get those things? You are.

Doubting yourself is bad. Failure leads to lowered confidence. Lowered confidence leads to self-doubt. Self doubt leads to failure. A circle you can't get out of.

O snap. Linking posts together. Seems like those past 2 posts all have to do with each other doesn't it?

I really don't have anything to put here today. I'd post a flash I made two weekends ago, but I'm too lazy to upload it. Plus, it was just a little experiment.

I might be changing around the Tetris and Mario. They're getting a bit old, I think.

  • Massive damage - Its Ridge Racer. Riiiiiiiiidge racer! Oh, and don't forget about the real Japanese history. There were giant enemy crabs back then. Trust me.

  • Incomprehensible intersections - Simply, wow. You thought Mercury was going to be bad. And I don't know what it is about me, but I spent a few minutes following the routes for at least two of these.

  • Mr. Obama inhaled... and actually got high - Unlike a certain, say, Mr. Clinton. At least he's honest about it. "That was the point." Does this make him "black" enough? Or should he have done crack and participated in prostitution as well?

Origins

[mood: damn, Yasunari Kawabata's stuff is hard to read] [reading: Palm-of-the-Hand Stories - Yasunari Kawabata]

There are evils, injustices, and problems everywhere in the world. They are easy to see and identify, but is their source also so easily found? Maybe the origin of these troubles is hard to find because it is right under your nose. Maybe it's you.

I have had some thoughts running in my head and am coming up with these short little blurbs [like the one you see above]. If you could comment on them, please do, I would like that. Schizometric.

[mood: schm':(((((ish] [listening to: pastorale]

So I finished obtaining The Science of Sleep this weekend and started watching it, and I finished it today. If you know me well, you've probably heard me talk about wanting to see this movie since, oh, September. So I've finally saw it. And, to be honest, it wasn't as great as I had hoped it to be.

The story is very convoluted. I heard Keia say that it is a lot like Willy Loman's story, and in a way, it is. The main character is Stephane, who has a severe problem of distorting his dreams from reality. He'd think that he's in a dream, but he's actually awake, and he'd fall into a dream while he's awake. Settings from both these places get mixed so that the entire story is very confusing. However, even with this confusion, the story never seems to lose focus. Its all revolving around Stephane trying to hook up with Stephanie. Its just that Stephane makes it hard for himself because of his schizometric mind.

One thing I do have a gripe against is its lack of character development. All of a sudden, Stephane just likes Stephanie. I get what the connection between the two is, but there is just not enough development between those two.

I really like the art direction of the movie, though. A lot of what is going on in Stephane's dreams are little models made of everythings like cardboard or yarn or paper. Its sense of art is fantastic.

And yes, there is a tragic downfall at the end, somewhat like Loman's. But I don't like spoilers.

All said, I have to ask myself a question. Even with its problems, was it worth my self-perpetuating hype? Yes. Score: 8/10

  • 11 dead, 1,000 injured in annual kite-flying festival - Don't laugh. But this really just got me: The festival is regularly marred by casualties caused by sharp kite strings or celebratory gunshots fired into the air.

  • Offical instructions - So that's why I make a mess everytime.

  • Reporters covering the Iraq War are "snobs" - Says the oh-so-venerated John Gibson. People are "weary" of war coverage? What do you say to those 42 dead since Smith's death, as the article points out? What do you say to those parents? How is ignoring the war supporting our troops? Or, or wait! I see! So your viewers forced you to cover Smith's death! Oh, I get it. So Fox New's viewers and Gibson's listeners are conservatives (i can assume they are conservative) hiding in a box that do not want to come out a face reality, but would rather focus on less weighty issues. I see. I'm surprised a special session of Congress wasn't called. Oh wait. I'm not. I forgot. Democrats are in power.

One for the nightcrawlers

[mood: schm':((((ish?] [listening to: classicals]

I got too frustrated and tired to work on the flash experiment for this weekend, so I called it quits. Actually, its more of a game. A half-game. I'd upload one I did last week... but I'm too lazy and tired. Expect a basic outline of it done for tomorrow, with more features to come.

I've actually been playing more Virtual Console on my Wii than anything else. DK rules.

And I am extensively upset at my piano right now. Yeah, I still practice, but I just end up banging my keyboard in frustration. I have an electric piano and it has no idea what tone, timbre, or dyanmics are. I've realized this problem in the past, but I have really not been too bothered by it, until now. Frustrating.

On to the Dailies. I have a big backlog since I haven't posted in a while. I might do an All-Dailies post tomorrow with 5 or so. Along with a normal update.

  • D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-L-Y - Its spelled DEFINITELY, not DEFINATELY. This has gotten on my nerves lately as well after I realized I've been spelling it wrong all this time.

  • Sex/Romantic map of a High School - This can probably be applied to any school. Its very interesting to see patterns, especially the lesbians and gays. One minute you're straight, then BAM, you're connected to a blue dot. You are also quick to pick up on pimps and whores. Check out the guy that did nine girls. And of course, there is already a YTMND out for it.

  • 40 years for porn and technology ignorance - Oh God. Please don't let this turn into a rant. Please don't. TOO LATE.
Ok, so here's the set up. A substitute teacher comes in to sub for a middle school class and wants to use the computer, but doesn't have a login ID. She gets a full-time teacher to log in with his ID. The full-time teacher said to not log him out or shut off the computer. The substitute agrees. The sub then steps out of the classroom for a bit and then when she returns, there are porn pop ups on the computer. And what happens? She faces 40 years in jail.

Why does she face 40 years in jail? A complete destruction of what we call the law, of course. Obviously, anyone with common sense will know that the teacher could not have possibly started the pop ups. She stepped out of the room, for Christ's sake. But no, the school system wants to cover up for the inadequate anti-spyware software. And this, in turn, reveals their technological ignorance. The school system hired an "expert," a police officer that deals with cybercrime. This police officer offered his "expert" analysis and concluded that the substitute, Ms. Amero, had intentionally visited porn sites. Oh? Intentionally? He reached this conclusion by viewing logfiles, which, I can tell you, don't say shit about what is intentional and what is not. The log will simply tell you what sites have been visited, and when, much like "History" does. In fact, I'll bet that all he did was fire up IE and take a look at "History." So how does this show that she intentionally viewed the sites? It doesn't. A spyware program could have hijacked the computer and started the slew of pop ups.

However, Amero's side hired a real expert. This expert has worked in the field since '66 and has worked with networks ranging from the NSA to the IRS. I call him an expert. His analysis concluded that the anti-spyware software was outdated and that the computer was infected long before the sub got there. Sadly, his testimony not allowed due to petty legal procedures he did not bother to go through.

So, because of this poor testimony and complete dumbasses of a judge (in the tech sense) and jury, she is likely to be convicted. Talk about destruction of law. However, why fight? Why even bother getting a crackhead testimony? Read on.

This entire fiasco is just a weak attempt by the school system to cover up their inadequate funding for computer administrators and software. Had they actually had an effective system (such as our beloved synmantic), the porn would not have even showed up. Had they had installed newer versions of Windows and newer versions of anti-spyware software, the computer would have never even gotten infected. This not a story about one teacher getting screwed for the rest of her life, but about one school system trying to keep face by sacrificing that one teacher.

And also what gets me is how technologically ignorant and ideologically blind the entire city seems to be. Immediately when porn is mentioned, they jump to terrible conclusions. "Porn in our schools!" "Where are our morals?!" "Skin the teacher, it must be her fault!" People need to lift the veil they are covered in and see reality. People should be appauled at how inadequate the protections on a computer are. People should be appauled at how technologically retarded the "expert" used in the trial is. People should be angry and up in arms at the school system. But, they aren't, and it looks like this poor woman is going to jail. People seem perfectly find about that, though.

Read the three articles I included in this rant. Its well worth it.

And please excuse any grammar mistakes or illogical statements I have made, its 2 in the morning.

A New Type of Rain

[mood: :\] [listening to: Meg & Dia]

Failure.
We're the new face of failure. <- yes, I listen to FOB.
The real world sucks.

I try as hard as I can to escape from this boxed in enclosure. I try and try, and push as hard as I can against these walls. No matter how hard I try, I can't get out, the square just becomes a circle.

I guess I am back in an emo update phase.
(((_0 + (((_- + poetry + guitar = emo band

Fall Out Boy. I like their stuff. Their songs are catchy and most of the times the lyrics are bitchin. Some gripes though is that sometimes Patrick's singing kinda sucks, ie - the only way you can find out what he says is to look in the CD pamphlet. Well Pete writes the lyrics, and I just think they are amazing. Amazingly witty, clever, and meaningful. We walk the plank on a sinking ship. All together we are alone. Last year's wishes are this year's apologies. Awesome stuff. I also thought the title " I've Got All This Ringing In My Ears And None On My Fingers," albiet long, was clever.

Unit circle

[mood: schm':(((((ish] [listening to: lvb]

Can you believe it? A practical application of the unit circle? Yeah well, thats exactly what one of the flash experiments I created today is. I'm going to call these little things the "30k Experiments." The dimensions for each of these things is 200x150 which equals 30,000. Clever, huh? Anyway, I made these two today:

The first one is a simple little circle game. And yes, it uses sine and cosine. In fact, thats practically all it uses. The file only has 1 frame, 4 text boxes, 46 lines of code, and 1 sine and 1 cosine function. Essentially, on each frame, it takes the x position of the mouse and adds the cosine value of a number that increases by .1 every frame multiplied by a magnifier. The same for y and sine. After each rotation, the number that it increases by jumps .05 higher and the magnifier enlarges as well. 46 lines of code and 2.8k. Thats a tiny package. Give your best score in the bloober.

And the second one is just something I whipped up about an hour ago. Its incomplete, as of now. I might expand on it tomorrow, or whenever I have time. Ship powerups. Oooh. Tantalizing. But I kinda want to make a ball bouncy thing tomorrow, with real physics; or as close as I can get.

Of course, I'm still open to suggestions.

  • Its her job - So, so true. Yet wrong. On many levels. But true. So true.

  • I will give money to anyone who can explain this - Really. Its funny. But what is this? A reality TV show? A game show? Whats the prize? Not getting a spanking?

  • Annoying things - You guys may not enjoy this list as much as I did, but this hits the nail on the head. And they should add to this list asking friends to make a website with no tangible rewards. I mean, I probably wouldn't mind spending 8 hours making a site for you. Hell, I'd probably enjoy it. But thats just 8 hours I don't have when I've gotta spend 23030948 hours on Thinkquest.

Flashing you

[mood: schm':(((((ish?] [listening to: lvb]

Tonight I had a sudden urge to return to making flash files. Mind you, not the flowery ones where theres speech and nice vector graphics. I meant more simple ones, like the ones I used to do. More "experiments" than actual cartoons, or what people normally expect "flash" work to be. Nontheless, here you go.

(clicking changes the mode)

Not bad for something I haven't done in 2 years, right? It feels good to code Actionscript again. For the record, I really loathe making flash graphics and animation, I cannot do it. I think I'm better at this kind of simple stuff. I like it better, at least. Plus, I wanted to take a break today from the hectic-ness that was Thinkquest at Tommy's house. I think I thoroughly enjoyed myself in the process.

And speaking of Thinkquest, ask Parth for a funny story about what happened today. You'll laugh.

  • Cuh-razy - Aaah! The picture has not been altered in any way in these two frames. It has simply been shifted left and right to create a Stereogram illusion.

  • This is the inside of your stomach - A video that shows what "worms" inside your body really means. Thats right, this is video taken from the stomach. And a warning to you guys, this video is pretty gross and not for the feint of heart. And a warning to you guys as well; you really don't want this happening to you. Although these little things are already inside one in three of us.

  • Vantriloquist - Very talented, funny, man from Letterman. His best impression? Japanese movies. Thats right. The dubbed ones. He does them. Live.

co rks oa king ftw

And I'm taking requests for other flash files. Simple, graphical stuff. Any ideas?

15 seconds + DRM + Zelda

[mood: schm':((((ish] [listening to: zeldargh]

Fifteen-second discussions. I thought about starting something like that with my post today. The premise is this: I'll start a topic in a post, and then there'd be a raging debate in the comments, but the catch is that every comment has to be limited to 15 seconds of writing time. I originally had them at 60 seconds, but you could actually read quite a lot in 60 seconds. You've probably read up to here in 15 seconds.

And boom, your point would be over. But then I got to thinking about how the idea wouldn't go so well, and there'd be cries of silencing free speech on this site. And that the main reason I would want to do something like that is to have something interesting to read here, but not spend that much time on long-winded discussions. Then I realized how selfish that was. And how I like the long discussions here.

But its an interesting idea.

On a totally different subject, what do you guys use as your desktops (background images)? I have a sudden urge to constantly change mine around now. I've gone through sites like David Lanham's and Pixelgirl Presents, but nothing good is really striking me. What do you guys use? Domo-kun? Still, Nik?

  • Tech support in the old days - Worth a laugh or two.

  • BONUS! Elevator trick - I'll be posting four or five today. But, AHHH!

  • MC Escher's drawing, in real life - And you thought his drawing were impossible drawings. This is insane. And for a minute I thought it said by "Andrew Lampy." That would havev been crazy.

  • How to explain DRM to your dad (or anyone else who doesn't know) - DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. And what is it good for? Well, essentially, its buying products with strings attached. A whole bunch of strings. You guys know my DRM rants, you've heard them before. But these are some plain and simple examples that anyone can understand. No one can escape DRM these days. CD's, ipods, computers, anything. Although, it is refreshing to know that people such as Mr. Steve Jobs of Apple are voicing opinions about matters like this. Although its most likely the PR department handed Jobs the letter and said "read this" and then posted it online. But still, its an effort.

  • YES. This is what Zelda needed - One of my biggest gripes against the new Zelda game is that its soundtrack still sounds like the one from Ocarina of Time. Released in 1998. Thats 9 years. This kind of music is what the franchise should have gone with. Yes, yes, you're right. It does sound fake. But not blatently synthy.

[mood: schm':(((((ish?] [listening to: gibberish./emperor.]

Ualuealeualeuale. Find the typo. Correct spelling found in the title.

Malcolm Gladwell. Terrific author. I can never finish one of his books, though. I have both of them, The Tipping Point and Blink. I finished about 1/3 of Tipping Point and had to stop because of school and now I'm a bit into Blink. Very interesting concepts if you read their respective Wikipedia pages. But, who has time for reading intense philosophical books? Really, who does?

I've been using this thing called Netvibes for about a week now and I encourage you guys to use it if you constantly check a bunch of blogs or websites, including this one. Very simple and intuitive web-app interface that relies heavily on AJAX and XML. Very well done. Easily add tabs, customize your feeds. Even has built in mini-API's to create custom mini-apps. I can constantly check about 13 blogs/sites a day this way.

  • Mad as hell; I'll poke your eyes out - This guy should not be a practicing optometrist. Its sad to see people's lives get ruined like this. I bet he was a straight A student in eye school. Sorta.

  • Mentos Booby Trap - I can't recall if I've posted this before, I'm cleaning out a bunch of my old links I've saved. But this is awesome. Effective, yet devilishly simple.

  • safenow.org - What to do incase of a terrorism or biological attack. And remember kids, NEVER drive a station wagon with a utility pole protruding from is hood.

I had a whole thing prepared about darkness and stuff. Not darkness like "mwahahaha Satan and the dark powers of the underworld will consume your soul!!!!" a la Vincent. It was a short literary masterpiece that I was working on, although my updates do not really count as masterpieces. Maybe if I spent more than 10 minutes on them.

Instead, I will be linking you all to this great SNL digital short. SLOTHS!

Freaking educational if you ask me. Man, sloths are hardcore.

Only fools are enslaved by time and space

[mood: schm':(((((ish] [listening to: lost]

Comment spam should be gone now, after I did some tweaking with the comment code and added an extra layer of hidden security that does not involve math. I had always thought that there were humans spamming me because of the math security check... but apparently not. If there are humans spamming us, we're out of luck, people.

This is the second time I've written this, as I accidently closed my first window. So I'll just get down to the. Nitty gritty.

  • Expensive cars, large engines, small manhood - Is it true? Look at the seller of this car. Go to his feedback comments, and look at the latest item he bought. He sure seems to confirm the myth. Oh, and look. Now he's selling it after he's done with it.

  • Super Mario Beatboxing Flute - I can't get enough of this. I really can't. I listened to this for like 6 times straight once.

  • Only fools are enslaved by time and space - 4 Dailies today; this explains the title. And pretty creepy, as well. This would be last, but the last one... is too terrific.

  • We Didn't Start This Website - The internets, in 3 minutes. Every possible meme and fad there ever possibly was is encapsulated here. Its limited to YTMND fads, though, as things like AYB are missing. Still, its a very good production, all set to the tune of "We Didn't Start the Fire." This really puts that Personal Project video Watson showed us to shame. This would be a kickass PP. It has original music. If you guys can get about half of these, you guys would be thoroughly internets-savvy. Savvy with the series of tubes, if you will. If you can't, just read its Wiki page.

Spam is annoying as hell

[mood: schm':(((((ish?] [listening to: lvb]

Spam is annoying as hell. And now its infiltrated the bloober, which means all this spam is up in your face. I will try to delete those as soon as I see them. Comments I delete now only sparodically because they never spam the recent posts; only the old ones. But with a lot of the spam messages now turning to pornographic material, it might cause problems for some censors, so I'll try to delete those as well. I will hopefully have enough time this weekend to implement my plan to stop this spam, but if not, comments AND bloobers might go down in case this spam gets out of hand. I'm finding out whoever the hell is doing this. Spam is a Class 1 misdemeanor.

I have to do sight reading in front of a judge tomorrow... and I've never done it before, and I haven't ever prepared for it. Awesome.

Its amazing how I'm surviving these days without any coffee. I need caffiene patches. I hear crack is a good substitute. As always, best Dailies last. And in case you guys haven't caught on for the last four months-ish, these bulleted links at the bottom are called the Dailies.

  • Prince's Super Bowl... er... "wardrobe malfunction" - No, not a nipple slip, not Nipplegate. Its phallus slip and penisgate. I don't believe how much people can blow little things like this up. Seriously, are they afraid that little Jimmy or little Susie will think "oh! penis!" and have their lives ruined? No. Janet Jackson's boob ruins lives, Prince's pointer is just funny. The only people who will get this reference are the ones who have already been exposed to things of this nature. Plus, rock stars have been exploiting the penis for years. So what if this was intentional?

  • Speaking of innuendos... - This one made me actually laugh out loud. Make of it what you will. Pervs.

  • Boxhead: More Rooms - A terrific sequel to the original Boxhead game. I played the crap out of this today; wasting a lot of time. Who cares. I made it onto the highscores. Currently, I'm at #11 with "cptn dave" and #25 with "blacktop." "cptn dave" was at #6 earlier so I'm sure by the time you read this, some people would have topped me, but I have a screencap saved so yay for me. Waste some time. Its awesome. The ultimate time waster.

Title tenative

[mood: schm':(((((ish] [listening to: lvb]

So I played through all my piano stuff today and my estimate from last time that it would take me around two hours to complete was a bit off, by about an hour. But still. Thats a long time.

Spam has seemingly slowed down in the past few days, for some reason. It used to be when I didn't clear out my comments database for two days, I'd get over 300 spam comments awaiting me - now its dwindled down to about 100. 100 spam comments is still a lot. And it doesn't help that IP banning doesn't help. But I'm going to introduce something new in a bit... when I have time. Something genius. You guys won't know its there, or that I've implemented it, but hopefully, it will weed out the spam bots from the spam humans. And spam humans, they can be won over.

Not really. But hey. I'm optimistic.

Not really. But hey.

  • Reaction sheep - Yeah, yeah, its old. But it doesn't make it any less fun. Whats your best time? My best was 0.18-something, but I more consistantly average at around 0.2. Even with a cup of coffee surging through my veins.

  • What American accent do you have? - Take this quiz to figure out where in America you are from... as if you're stupid enough to not know. Its interesting. They say I'm from Minnesota.

  • The Machine is Us - For those of you who aren't caught up with the whole Web 2.0 thing, this will get you up to speed. It takes you back to the very beginning, when the web and internets was just used for the simpliest of things - relaying data and information. Then it takes you through the dark days of when structure and style mixed, and up to speed to today's XML and Flickr and things of that nature. Informative video for those in the dark. This highlights one of the defining factors that is shaping the next World Wide Web, though: a social revolution. You guys may not realize it now, but you're taking part in a social revolution on the web. Pointless banter in the bloobe and the outpouring of human emotion in Eric's last post would not have been possible in the old Web. The web is mobilizing into interconnected communities and social networks. We, theblacktop are one. We are theblacktop. I'd turn this into a long essay about either where the web is going or how far we've come... but Hublog's anniversary is coming up. I can wait til then.

I'm a Survivor

[mood: that was an awesome movie ->] [watching: Little Miss Sunshine]

I've probably never told you guys these stories before, but I find them kind of funny, and kinda depressing at the same time. However only depressing in the idea that I almost never happened. It is a depressing concept. A world without me that is. Well kind of makes me grateful for many things and also I owe many thanks to the mother of my mother. Well here goes.

Well when my parents got married, my mom and dad planned to have just two kids. I think they wanted a guy and a girl, like most people do. Well my mom got pregnant, but she miscarried :'( my older brother/sister [too little to know then] and therefore it never happened. Well yeah. So that was my first encounter with non-existence, if they had had that child, there would have not been a second thought as to have a child after my sister. Well anyways, my parents brought into this world my sister. They then considered just stopping there. Yeah. She was planned. I was kind of an accident. Kindasorta. My mom then realized she was pregnant again and then they went back to the consideration of just having my sister. O man. So they thought about... uhh... "getting rid" of me, if you know what I mean. Not like give up for adoption. Like, never make it out of the womb alive. Well anyways. My grandmother convinced my mother not to and said that my sister would be lonely and bored as an only child. That part just always makes me smile, my grandma was awesome. Thus, the great Eric Chen was brought into this world.

Well yeah that's it for today. No great literary masterpieces, witty comments, little blurbs/rants, etc. to be found here today.

Aaaaand.... if you want to thank anyone, thank my grandmother. You know you're glad she saved me.

An update!!

[mood: schm':((((((ish?] [listening to: dvorak]

It just occured to me that I haven't been updating the acrhives tab at the bottom of the page. Will I ever? Probably. Soon? Probably not.

So all I did for the majority of today was be a runner for some event at my piano school for 3 hours. Being a runner for old piano lady judges is not very fun. One of them was actually quite young. But acted like an old piano lady judge anyway so it was the same. It also didn't help that I got had to stay about an hour extra because the person on for the next shift never showed up. Ah, well. The more CAS hours the better.

You probably won't see me updating as much in the next week or so as I have to learn TONS of crap for Keyboard Skills. Thats a piano thing. Basicall you play scales and chords and arpegios and stuff. For what reason? None. At all. You just have to. So thats 12 keys * 4 major/harmonic minor/melodic minor/chromatic scales ( * 2 for contrary motion on major/harmonic minor) * 4 major/minor/diminished/augmented triads ( * the 3 inversions of each) * 1 major cadence * 1 minor cadence ( * the 3 inversions of each) * 2 dominant chords * 1 arpeggio ( * 3 for the inversions) * 1 dominant arpeggio = (12 keys * 28 different items) = 336 different items with 336 different finger patterns. If, say, each item takes on average 15-20 seconds to complete, thats 7-9min20secs per key, which means 1hr24mins-1hr52mins for if I play everything. If I screw up, I'll probably play the item again. So in reality, its about 2 hours if I want to practice everything. Say I want to be ready by my lesson, Wednesday. I only have three days to practice. Thats 72 hours, but I have to subtact out school and sleep. If I go to school for 8.5 hours a day (including bus ride) and sleep for 5.5 hours a night, thats 72hrs - 33.5 hours on other things = 38.5 hours between now and then to practice. But then, I have to eat and do homework, which I'll estimate to be about 4 hours each day (3 hw, 1 eat), which = 38.5 - (4*3) = 26.5hrs to practice. Which means I can only go through my scales and stuff 13.25 times between now and then if all I do is practice. Which, pssh. I'm not going to do. And the original 15-20secs was a generous estimate.

Damn. I like doing this like that. I don't know why. I probably could have gone through a bunch of things in the time I typed that up.

I haven't fully scoured digg in a few days, so forgive me if these Dailies are a bit outdated. As always, best is last.

  • Conan vs. Serene Williams in Wii Tennis - And guess who wins. Wii need to get together and play Wii together sometime, folks.

  • Flux capacitor for sale - ... by DeLorean. Searh for "flux" and you'll get a result "Flux Capacitor." Its a good chuckle to look at the Part # too.

  • Tecmo Super Bowl predictions - Yeah, everyone does the obligatory Madden prediction. But what about the Tecmo Bowl one? After this, I'm going to find out myself with my own copy of it. Just in time too. In 24 hours, we would have known how bad the Bears crushed and totally dominated over the Colts.
